In addition to the full course, The Edinburgh Kiltmakers Academy has responded to market demand for individuals to experience this traditional craft under an experienced kiltmaker's tuition. Potential students can attend an open day to meet the team and be introduced to tartan pleating and the sewing skills used in kiltmaking. On acceptance to the course students would then decide on the tartan to be used and if wanting to make a kilt for someone special bring them in for measuring. On arrival of the cloth we will undertake the calculations and mark out/partly set up the kilt ready for the student to start sewing. Classes will start 2 weeks after ordering cloth, subject to availability. Please note that it may be necessary to choose an alternative cloth.
The kilt-making will then take place over the next 12 weeks. Students should expect to commit to sewing at home as directed by the course leader.
The sessions will be run on a Tuesday evening between 6 and 9pm.
Within this timeframe the student will not be taught the full intricacies of kiltmaking. However the course enables the student to make one full kilt.
Please note: the tutor may aid or complete certain tasks where necessary.
We aim to make this a relaxed and fun experience. Therefore no written assessments of the work will be undertaken. However, the tutor will ensure each stage is completed to EKA standards and the completed kilt will be finished to a extremely high quality.
The cost of the course tuition is £360. In addition to that the cloth chosen may cost between £120 to £180 depending on: the tartan chosen, the mill it is purchased from and the size of the wearer.
If students wish to enrol on the full course after completion then a discount of £150 will apply to the cost of the full course.
