The Workshop content is designed for a variety of skill levels and may be best suited to individuals who possess good hand-sewing skills. However, if your sewing skills are not so strong, we can arrange a skills session to be taught and practised prior to your course start date. A practical timescale will be agreed for this additional training.
Applications from overseas will be considered on receipt of skill level evidence, details of which will be communicated on application.
Applicants will be grouped according to skill level as far as is practically possible.
The Intensive/Overseas Workshops run for 2 weeks duration.
Tuition time is five days per week from 10am till 5pm.
Class sizes are limited to provide optimum tuition conditions.
Tuition will concentrate on the making of adult gents kilts only. It is envisaged that those having greater sewing experience may produce additional kilts within the timeframe.
Edinburgh Kiltmakers Academy provides all cloth and component materials for each kilt and as such the finished kilts remain the property of Edinburgh Kiltmakers Academy. Students may choose to purchase their finished kilts from the Academy *at cost price. However, if Students wish to make a kilt in a specific tartan, for an intended recipient, then they must ensure that person is correctly measured and the cloth ordered a minimum of 3 weeks before the course start date. Please inform the Academy of your intentions at the earliest opportunity.
*Tartan kilt length costs will differ depending on the amount of fabric needed and the supplier chosen and can be anywhere between £120 and £180 approximately. The component materials can be purchased at a cost of £18.
We aim to make this a relaxed and fun experience and therefore no written assessments of the work undertaken are required but the tutor will ensure each stage is completed to EKA standards and the completed kilt will be finished to a quality the student will be proud of. However, if students wish to continue learning and complete the full EKA certified course in the future then the kilts made will qualify as evidence. The course tutor will explain any additional paper evidence needed to accompany the kilt to qualify. A reduction in the Full Course fees may apply.
The cost of the course is £600. A non-returnable deposit of £150 will be payable on acceptance of a place.
Gordon Nicolson Kiltmakers reserve the right to utilise completed (un-purchased) kilts as Hire stock or to make available For Sale to the general public as Academy Student Handmade Kilts.
